Red meat might not be the healthiest choice for dinner but it's still one of the most popular meals for a date night, indulgent meal or a special occasion. Sometimes you just can't beat a good steak.

But if you're tired of spraying hot oil and smoke across your kitchen, food experts are advising that you don't actually need to fry your steak in a frying pan on the hob.

In fact, it's healthier and less messy to cook your fillets in the oven instead.

According to recipe website Gimme Some Oven, which admittedly is somewhat biased in favour of oven based recipes, sets out exactly how to make delicious oven steak in a matter of mere minutes.

It says: "Steak is surprisingly easy to prepare and cook in the oven to your desired degree of doneness, and just as delicious as ever!

"They keys to cooking steak in the oven are pretty simple: you need to begin with room temperature steak, sear it in a screaming hot skillet, broil it the rest of the way in the oven until it reaches your desired level of doneness, and then let the steak rest for a few minutes to lock in those juices."

For this recipe, you need to start with steak at room temperature, then season it by brushing with oil on both sides. Then take a pre-heated frying pan and place it in the pan for 30 seconds to sear it. This is just searing it, not actually frying the steak in the pan.

From there, transfer to the oven and bake.

The site adds: "Carefully use an oven mitt to move the entire pan to the oven, where the second side of the steak will continue to sear. Broil for 3 minutes, then flip the steak.

"Broil for another 2-3 minutes more, or until the steak reaches 5° below your desired level of doneness. (The steaks will continue to cook a bit more once they are removed from the oven.)

"Doneness temperatures, measured in the thickest part of the steak, are as follows:

Rare: 125°F or 52°C (Remove from the oven at 120°F or 49°C.)

Medium-rare: 135°F or 57°C (Remove from the oven at 130°F or 54°C.)

Medium: 145°F or 63°C (Remove from the oven at 140°F or 60°C.)

Medium-well: 150°F or 66°C (Remove from the oven at 145°F or 63°C.)

Well done: 160°F or 71°C (Remove from the oven at 155°F or 68°C.)"
