Manchester United have safeguarded themselves with a clause in the event that Chelsea decide to sell Alejandro Garnacho for over £40million. Garnacho had a somewhat sluggish start to his new season with the Blues, spending two of the first five matches across all competitions this term warming the bench and only making the starting line-up in Chelsea's Carabao Cup clash with Lincoln.
However, the 21-year-old seems to be hitting his stride in recent weeks. Garnacho has netted two goals and provided two assists in his last four outings under the guidance of Enzo Maresca. While this will undoubtedly bring a grin to the Chelsea boss' face, United supporters might be worried that their club has once again let go of a player who could flourish elsewhere.
But it appears United were savvy to the situation, particularly given Chelsea's current transfer strategy.
Chelsea are renowned for snapping up young talents with high potential on lengthy contracts. Garnacho's agreement extends until 2032. The goal is to cultivate a youthful squad and, when the moment is right, offload players at a profit after nurturing their careers.
United were evidently cognisant of Chelsea's tactic, as they included a 10 per cent sell-on clause in Garnacho's contract. This means that if Chelsea were to offload him for double his current worth, around £80m, Ruben Amorim's side would pocket £8m from the transfer.
The Argentinian international departed Old Trafford following a public spat with Amorim, unhappy with his limited minutes in the Europa League final.
He said: "Up until the final I played every round helping the team, and today I play 20 minutes, I don't know. The final will influence [my decision] but the whole season, the situation of the club. I'm going to try to enjoy the summer and see what happens afterwards."
Now looking for a new beginning at Chelsea, Garnacho is keen to prove Amorim wrong. United, meanwhile, will likely be satisfied if their 10 per cent sell-on clause eventually proves fruitful.
